Tesla has started hiring in India, indicating its plans to enter the country’s electric vehicle (EV) market. The move follows CEO Elon Musk’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US.
The company has posted 13 job openings on LinkedIn, covering both customer-facing and back-end roles. These include Tesla Advisor, Service Technician, Customer Support Specialist, Consumer Engagement Manager, and Delivery Operations Specialist. Positions are available in Mumbai and Delhi.
Tesla had previously avoided India due to high import duties. However, recent policy changes have reduced the basic customs duty on luxury EVs priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, making the market more appealing.

India’s EV sector remains small compared to China, where 11 million electric cars were sold last year, while India’s sales stood at around 100,000. Despite this, Tesla sees potential for growth as the country pushes clean energy initiatives and aims for net-zero emissions by 2070.
While there is no official launch date, analysts suggest Tesla may start by importing vehicles before deciding on local manufacturing based on demand and government support.
