Odisha KIIT Nepal Student Suicide : Tensions flared at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) after a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal, Prakriti Lamsal, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday evening. Police suspect suicide and have detained a male student for questioning under charges of abetment.
Students from Nepal staged protests on campus, blocking roads and accusing the university administration of ignoring Lamsal’s complaints of harassment by her batchmate. Protesters claimed she had reached out to KIIT’s International Relations Office but received no action in response.

University authorities, however, suggested that the incident was linked to a personal relationship issue. A statement from KIIT mentioned that Lamsal was believed to be in a relationship with a fellow student, and the situation might have led to the tragedy.
In response to the unrest, the university ordered all Nepali students—over 500 in number—to vacate the campus immediately. They were provided transport to railway stations and directed to return home. Meanwhile, two platoons of police personnel were deployed to restore order on campus.
Police have sealed Lamsal’s hostel room and are conducting an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem and will be handed over to her family upon their arrival. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident while monitoring the situation at KIIT.
